Do I have a choice about which home health care agency I use?
Yes, you do have a choice. If your doctor refers you to a home health care agency you can choose Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey (VNANNJ), which is a non-profit visiting nurse service that serves the greater Morris county area of New Jersey.

Do I have to have been in the hospital to be eligible for care from a home health care provider?
No, you do not need to have been in the hospital to receive care from a home health care provider. Referrals may be made by physicians, hospital personnel, community organizations, an adult day care center, family members, or anyone who knows someone who could benefit from our non-profit home health care agency.
A registered nurse (RN) will make a full assessment of the patient and develop a comprehensive plan of care, involving the family and other health professionals.
Call or contact us. We can even provide you with information before care is necessary in order to help you plan ahead for visiting nurse services, caring for aging parents, hospice care and many other types of home nursing care.

When seeking a home health care provider, what should I look for?
- Look for qualifications. Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey is a non-profit home health care agency licensed by the New Jersey State Department of Health and senior services, certified by Medicare and Medicaid. VNANNJ is accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) and is a non-profit United Way Member Agency. All our certified visiting nurses are highly qualified and properly licensed professional Registered Nurses (RN). All our certified home health aides are continuously educated and supervised. And all our home care providers receive on-going staff education for their specialty, whether it is elder home care, occupational therapy, amputee rehabilitation, cognitive rehabilitation, Alzheimer's home care, hospice care or adult day care.
- Look for non-profit status. Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey is a non-profit home health care agency. As a non-profit organization, our highest standard is patient satisfaction with our home nursing care and other services, not profit. Our motivation is serving the community, not benefiting investors and owners. Funding is derived from a combination of government grants, generous private donations and fees paid. We are further supported by many dedicated volunteers who assist with our many home care solutions such as senior home health care, VNA hospice and also our adult day health care.
- Look for home health care agency specialists. VNANNJ employs hundreds of home care providers including visiting nurses, certified home health aides, and specialists in home health nursing, Alzheimer's home care, palliative care nursing, hospice care, occupational therapy and other therapists, nutritionists, social workers and adult day care.
- Look for experience. Since 1898, our mission has been to help the residents in the communities we serve who need specialized home care solutions. Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey has a long and distinguished history as a compassionate home health care provider and it is committed to ensuring that appropriate resources are always available to meet the needs of every patient.
- Look for quality. VNANNJ provides home care solutions from the most basic and traditional visiting nurse services to the most innovative technology-based programs — all our services are of the highest standards and are provided with understanding and compassion.
- Look for patient satisfaction. Our ability to deliver close to 100% client satisfaction is independently documented. (For more information, contact Community Relations at 1-800-WE-VISIT.) Our unique ability to consistently deliver home care solutions with this level of patient satisfaction motivates us to expand our very special visiting nurse service for the benefit of all.
- Look for innovation. VNANNJ is a dynamic organization that has thrived for more than a century because of its willingness to anticipate and embrace change. Today, our visiting nurses and therapists carry laptops to access patient records while in-home. Telehealth provides 24/7 remote patient monitoring and patient access to home care providers. And Health Watch provides patients with a 24/7 emergency alert program.

What services are provided by home health aides?
Home health care aides provide many home care solutions, including:
- Personal Care – Home health aides are adept at assisting the patient and caregiver with bathing, hair care and shampoo, oral hygiene and denture care, shaving, nail care, assistance with dressing, toileting, catheter or ostomy care, and checking oral temperature, pulse and respirations.
- Activities of Daily Living – Assistance with walking, home exercise program and assistance with oral medications are all important skills our home health aides bring to elder home care patients and our other clients.
- Homemaking Activities – Bed making and linen change, light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation and clean up.
- Companionship/Communication – Socialization, conversation, writing for, or reading to the client and answering home telephone are just some of the helpful services provided — especially helpful for those caring for aging parents or providing any senior home care.
- Chores/Errands – Our home health aides, and in some cases our specially trained volunteers, can assist with laundry, cleaners, grocery shopping, pharmacy and accompanying client to appointments.
