Dangerous Winter Falls Are Preventable2/24/2026 One in Four Seniors Falls Each Year — Winter Raises the Risk This has already been a hard winter in Northern New Jersey, with slippery ice and snow. Falls are very common among older adults, and winter further increases the risk of serious injuries, loss of independence, or even death. In fact, more than one in four adults aged 65 and older falls each year in the U.S., and falling once doubles the risk of falling again. Here are practical steps seniors and their caregivers can take to reduce the fall risk this winter: Prep Before Going Outside
At Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey, our nurses and care teams brave all weather conditions to support patients and caregivers in the comfort of their homes, making winter falls even less of an issue. Please stay warm, stay steady, and stay safe this winter! Did you know that Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey (VNANNJ) is the longest-serving VNA in the state of New Jersey? So we know a thing or two about what services people need to recover from illness and surgery at home and how to help seniors "age in place" to avoid hospitalization and nursing homes. For help in making a plan for successful aging at home before you have a health emergency visit our Guide to Aging at Home. And visit www.vnannj.org to learn more about our home health care and hospice services. Medicare and supplemental insurance often do not cover all the care our patients and caregivers need. If you would like to help, please visit vnannj.org/donate or call VNA Foundation at 973-451-4148. The Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey (VNANNJ) is a leading provider of comprehensive home health care services in Morris, Hunterdon, Sussex, Warren, Somerset, and Passaic counties in Northern New Jersey. Established in 1898, generations have known that just one call opens the door to quality, patient-centered home health care solutions that allow patients to remain in the comfort of their homes with dignity, health, and independence. © All content on The Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey's website, including blog posts, may be reproduced only if attributed to our organization with a link to vnannj.org.

Cancer Prevention Everyone Can Do February is Cancer Prevention Month, a time to focus on the steps that can reduce risk, support early detection, and save lives. Many cancers are preventable or more treatable when caught early. The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) estimates that more than 40% of the 2 million cancer cases diagnosed last year, and nearly half of the more than 60,000 cancer deaths, can be attributed to preventable causes like smoking, alcohol consumption, sun exposure, excess body weight, and physical inactivity. At Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey, we educate patients about cancer prevention, how to recognize early warning signs, how to manage symptoms, and how to navigate recovery, all from the comfort of home. This Cancer Prevention Month is a good time to begin, or remember these important prevention tips:

Love Truly is the Best Medicine2/10/2026 Love Looks Like Care at Home This Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating a love that goes beyond cards and chocolates. We’re celebrating the love our nurses, therapists, social workers, dieticians, aides, chaplains, and families show through compassionate care. We see it every day. It's love in the form of a caregiver’s steady hand, a reassuring voice, and a home visit by our helpful staff, which brings comfort, dignity, and peace of mind to patients and their families when they need it most. This Valentine’s Day, we thank you for being part of the Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey family, and for showing that love truly is the best medicine. February is American Heart Month, and Home Care Matters More Than Ever February is American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Nearly half of all American adults live with some form of cardiovascular disease, and many are older adults managing chronic conditions at home. At Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey (VNANNJ), we help patients monitor blood pressure, manage medications, and recover safely after cardiac events. Just as important, we help families prepare for the unexpected by encouraging a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan (CERP), so caregivers know the warning signs, who to call, and what to do in a cardiac emergency when every second matters. This proactive, at-home approach helps protect patients, reduce complications, and bring peace of mind to families. Learn more about creating your own CERP here. This American Heart Month, we thank you for helping VNANNJ protect hearts, strengthen families, and keep our community healthier at home.
