Why seniors fall more often in summer months.

7/30/2024

Picture

Summer requires more care than ever.

Older adults tend to experience more falls during the summer months compared to other times of the year. There are many reasons why this happens:

  1. Outdoor Activities: Summer often encourages more outdoor activities such as walking, gardening, and attending events. These activities can involve uneven terrain, slippery surfaces (such as wet grass or pool decks), and unfamiliar surroundings, increasing the risk of falls.
  2. Heat-related Issues: Seniors may be more prone to dehydration and heat exhaustion during hot weather, which can lead to dizziness, weakness, and falls.
  3. Footwear: Wearing sandals or flip-flops in summer can be less supportive and increase the risk of trips and falls, especially for seniors with mobility issues.
  4. Increased Physical Activity: Some seniors may become more active in summer, which can lead to overexertion, muscle fatigue, and loss of balance, contributing to falls.
  5. Vision Issues: Bright sun can impact visibility and equilibrium and seniors may experience changes in vision due to conditions such as cataracts or age-related macular degeneration, which can affect depth perception and increase the risk of falls, particularly in unfamiliar settings.

To reduce the risk of falls during the summer months, seniors and their caregivers can take several precautions:
  • STAY ALERT – conversing and being distracted while walking are prime reasons for falls.
  • Wear appropriate footwear with good support and non-slip soles.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if not feeling thirsty.
  • Take breaks in shaded or cool areas to prevent overheating.
  • Use walking aids (walking sticks, hiking poles, cane, etc.) for support on uneven surfaces.
  • Always be aware of hazards like tree roots or cracks in sidewalks.
  • Wear sunglasses and hats to reduce glare and protect against heat-related vision issues.

By being alert and taking proactive measures, everyone can enjoy the summer safely while minimizing the risk of falls and related injuries.

Why Using Sunscreen Never Gets Old

7/23/2024

Picture

The sun never quits, neither should you

Seniors should continue using sunscreen as they age, just as they did when they were younger. In fact, sunscreen is now even more crucial for protecting thinning skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which includes an increased risk of skin cancer.

Here are some key points to consider regarding seniors and sunscreen:
  1. Skin Aging: Aging skin becomes more delicate and prone to damage from UV radiation. Sunscreen helps protect against these effects and can slow down the development of wrinkles and age spots.
  2. Skin Cancer Risk: The risk of skin cancer increases with age, especially for those who have had significant sun exposure throughout their lives. Regular use of sunscreen can lower the risk of developing skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
  3. Sun Sensitivity: Some medications and medical conditions that seniors may have can increase their skin's sensitivity to the sun. This makes it even more important for seniors to use sunscreen to prevent sunburn and other skin damage.
  4. Choosing the Right Sunscreen: Seniors should choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or higher. It should protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Water-resistant sunscreens can be beneficial, especially if sweating or swimming.
  5. Application and Reapplication: It's important to apply sunscreen generously to all exposed skin areas at least 15-30 minutes before going outdoors. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating heavily.
  6. Sun Protection Practices: Along with sunscreen, seniors should practice other sun-safe behaviors, such as wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses with UV protection, and UV-protective clothing that covers arms and legs.
  7. Regular Skin Checks: Seniors should regularly check their skin for any changes, such as new moles or changes in existing moles, as these can be signs of skin cancer. Prompt medical attention should be sought for any concerning skin changes.

Sunscreen remains an essential part of sun protection for older adults. By continuing to use sunscreen and adopting other sun-safe practices, seniors can help maintain the health and appearance of their skin while reducing their risk of skin cancer.

What you should know about hyperthermia (heat illness)

7/16/2024

Picture

Seniors especially should be aware of hyperthermia

Hyperthermia is an elevated body temperature that can be particularly dangerous for older adults. Hyperthermia can include heat stroke, heat edema (swelling in your ankles and feet when you get hot), heat syncope (sudden dizziness after exercising in the heat), heat cramps, and heat exhaustion.

By being aware of the dangers and symptoms of hyperthermia, seniors can take proactive measures to protect themselves during hot weather and know how to respond effectively if symptoms occur. Here are some key points:

1) Types of Hyperthermia — There are different forms of hyperthermia that seniors should be aware of:
  • Heat Exhaustion: This is characterized by heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and a rapid pulse. It can progress to heat stroke if not treated promptly.
  • Heat Stroke: A medical emergency where the body temperature rises rapidly, leading to confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures, and even organ damage. Heat stroke requires immediate medical attention.

2) Increased Susceptibility -- Seniors are prone to hyperthermia due to age-related changes that affect the body's ability to regulate temperature. Chronic medical conditions and certain medications can further increase this susceptibility.

3) Recognizing Symptoms -- It's crucial for seniors and those around them to recognize the early signs of heat-related illnesses, such as excessive sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache, and nausea. Prompt attention to these symptoms can prevent more severe complications.

4) Risk Factors — Factors that increase the risk of hyperthermia in seniors include:
  • Poor air conditioning or lack of access to cooling facilities.
  • Living alone and not having someone to check on them during hot weather.
  • Chronic medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain medications that affect heat regulation.

5) Preventive Measures — Seniors can take several steps to prevent hyperthermia:
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if not feeling thirsty.
  • Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and use fans or air conditioning to stay cool.
  • Keep in touch with friends, family, or neighbors to ensure someone checks on them during heat waves.

6) Emergency Response — If someone suspects that a senior is experiencing heat stroke (high body temperature, altered mental state, rapid pulse, possibly unconsciousness), it is essential to call emergency services immediately and take steps to cool the person down by moving them to a cooler place and applying cool cloths.

Tips for traveling for (and with) seniors

7/9/2024

Picture

Travel for seniors requires special planning

With summer vacations underway, traveling with senior adults requires careful planning and consideration to ensure their comfort, safety, and enjoyment. Here are some tips to help create a smoother experience:

1) Plan Ahead:
  • Research destinations and accommodations that are senior-friendly, including accessible hotels, appropriate walking or wheelchair-accessible trails, transportation options, and attractions.
  • Make sure to book accommodations with amenities that cater to seniors, such as elevators, ground-floor rooms if stairs are an issue, and rooms with safety features like grab bars in bathrooms (unfamiliar bathrooms are a danger and a fall can quickly end a trip).
2) Consult with Healthcare Providers:
  • Before traveling, seniors should consult their healthcare provider to ensure they are fit for travel and discuss any special considerations or medical precautions needed.
  • Obtain copies of prescriptions and make sure to pack an adequate supply of medications, as well as a list of medications and allergies.
3) Pack Wisely:
  • Pack comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for the destination’s climate and activities.
  • Include necessary medical supplies, such as a first aid kit, pain relievers, and any mobility aids (e.g., cane, walker) if needed.
4) Plan for Public Transportation Needs:
  • Research options for transportation that accommodate mobility limitations, such as wheelchair-accessible vehicles or airports with wheelchair assistance services.
  • Inquire about the accessibility of attractions and plan accordingly.
5) Take Breaks and Pace Activities:
  • Recognize that seniors may need more rest and breaks between activities. Plan for leisurely itineraries with time built in for relaxation and downtime.
  • Allow flexibility in the schedule to accommodate any unexpected needs or changes in pace.
6) Ensure Safety:
  • Keep important documents (e.g., passports, ID, travel insurance information) in a secure and easily accessible place.
  • Provide emergency contact information to traveling companions and keep a list of local emergency numbers handy.
7) Stay Hydrated and Eat Well:
  • Encourage seniors to drink plenty of water, especially in warmer climates, to prevent dehydration.
  • Plan for meals at regular intervals, always carry appropriate snacks, and consider dietary restrictions.
8) Communicate and Listen:
  • Maintain open communication with the senior adult about their preferences, concerns, and comfort level throughout the trip – now is not the time to push a senior beyond their comfort level.
  • Be attentive to any signs of discomfort or fatigue and be prepared to adjust plans accordingly.
9) Make Memories:
  • Encourage seniors to participate in activities they enjoy and create memorable experiences together.
10) Enjoy!
  • Be prepared to deal with impatient fellow travelers while you slow down, take time to appreciate the journey, and create opportunities for relaxation and fun!
By following these tips and being mindful of the specific needs and preferences of senior adults, you can help ensure a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable travel experience for everyone involved.

Did you know? You are probably dehydrated.

7/2/2024

Picture
Hydration is even more important than you think.
Multiple studies have shown that 75% of adults in the U.S. suffer from chronic dehydration. And adults over 65 may only have around 60% of their body mass as water, compared to 72% in younger adults, which can make older adults even more susceptible to dehydration. It’s no wonder that dehydration is a frequent cause of hospital admission for older adults.

Staying sufficiently hydrated is important for many reasons, including some you may not realize. For instance:
  1. Chronic dehydration is associated with an increased risk of degenerative diseases and diminished physical functions.
  2. Improved hydration has been shown to positively affect various chronic diseases.
  3. Proper hydration is critical to skin health, which is of vital importance as we age.
  4. Several studies have demonstrated that cognitive performance is associated with hydration status, especially in older adults.
  5. Inadequate water intake is regarded as a common cause of constipation and other gastrointestinal (GI) system issues.

Staying hydrated can be as easy as 1-2-3:
  1. Drink water when you wake up – as soon as you get out of bed, drink a large glass of water to kick start your digestion, boost your cognitive ability, quench your thirsty skin, and contribute to your overall well-being.
  2. Drink water before every meal – this is not only a good built-in reminder to hydrate, it will also help fill you up, limit your calorie intake, and aid in digestion.
  3. Make hydration part of your daily routine – add hydration breaks throughout your day when most convenient, perhaps every time you take a bathroom break, or anytime you feel the need to snack.
