We Can’t or We Don’t?

You CAN do this!

At the Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey (VNA), we see every day how small shifts create big changes. A patient who once said “I can’t walk that far” learns to say “I just did.” Another who feared recovery at home discovers “I am stronger than I thought.”

Reframing challenges — turning “we can’t” into “we don’t yet” — changes both body and mind. Each small win, whether it’s a step taken or a new skill regained, opens the door to greater independence and possibility.

That is the heart of home care: walking beside patients until “we can’t” becomes “we do.”

You can also turn “I can’t” into “I don’t yet” to stay healthy, avoid falls, and recover the muscle mass and mobility you thought you lost.

Next Steps:

• Start with one small action today by setting a goal. Maybe it's something you think isn’t possible simply because you stopped doing it. So, touch your toes, walk further, squat to the floor.
• Don’t be too hard on yourself, and don’t give up.
• Celebrate your wins! Talk about your progress to friends and family.
• Move on to more goals — you can DO this!
