Isolation: If you test positive for COVID-19, you can isolate yourself from others, which is crucial in protecting vulnerable individuals like the elderly.

Preventing Spread: Even if your symptoms are mild, knowing if you are COVID-19-positive will help you make responsible decisions about travel and meeting with others to prevent spreading the virus.

Medical Care: If you test positive for COVID-19 you can inform your healthcare providers for appropriate medical care and advice. Some individuals may develop severe symptoms that require hospitalization and early diagnosis is essential for timely treatment.​

Healing at Home: With the proper diagnosis, seeking the right care to heal at home becomes possible.

The importance of hydration

Here are some reasons why hydration is so important:
​Dehydration has been reported to be a frequent cause of hospital admission for older adults. While we may forget to drink water frequently, it is essential for various bodily functions. Adequate hydration plays a key role in many aspects of our physical and mental health. Here are some of the reasons why it's so important:
​

  • Joint Lubrication: Water serves as a lubricant for joints, helping to reduce friction and prevent pain and stiffness.
  • Heart Health: Dehydration can lead to increased heart rate and reduced blood volume, putting extra strain on the cardiovascular system.
  • Skin Health: Well-hydrated skin is more elastic and less prone to dryness, wrinkles, and other issues.
  • Kidney Function: Adequate hydration is crucial for the proper functioning of the kidneys, which filter waste products from the blood and produce urine.
  • Cognitive Function: Dehydration can impair cognitive function, leading to difficulties in concentration, memory, and mood swings. 
  • Detoxification: Hydration supports the body's natural detoxification processes by flushing out toxins and waste products through urine.
  • Cell Function: Water is essential for the proper functioning of cells, the basic building blocks of the body. It helps transport nutrients and oxygen to cells and removes waste products.
  • Body Temperature Regulation: Proper hydration helps regulate body temperature through sweating and the release of heat. Dehydration can lead to overheating and heat-related illnesses.
  • Digestion: Water is necessary for the digestion of food. It helps break down food particles, aids in the absorption of nutrients in the intestines, and prevents constipation.
  • Physical Performance: Dehydration can lead to muscle cramps, fatigue, and reduced physical capacity.

The Best Exercise For Seniors

​Squatting for Longevity

It has been proven that we naturally lose muscle mass as we age, which is why strength training is so important for seniors. Of course, there are many options for strength training, including isometric exercise (bodyweight training), resistance training (using weights), and swimming. But the most convenient and effective way to build muscle and maintain mobility is the simple squat. In many cultures around the world, the squat is simply a way of life and helps to maintain mobility well into old age.

Consider that every time you sit down, kneel down, and stand up, that’s basically a squat. But as we can readily observe in those of old age, these daily movements can become very challenging. Squats strengthen muscles in your legs, glutes, lower back, and core, helping to stabilize your body and keep knees and hips flexible, prolonging the ability to perform daily tasks. Squats also provide good cardiovascular exercise, making them an excellent full-body workout. Some studies have even shown a correlation between lower body strength and longevity, including being able to stand on one foot unaided and rising from a seated position without using your hands.

10 tips to recover from the holidays

The holidays are wonderful!
​Recovering from the stress and indulgence can be challenging. Here are some tips to help you get back into your normal routine.
​
  • Prioritize Self-care: You probably gave a lot of yourself to others during the holidays. Take time now to put yourself first so you can do all that follows here.
  • Rest: One of the most important things to do is to get plenty of rest. Prioritize sleep and give your body a chance to recover.
  • Hydrate: Did you know most adults are in a state of chronic dehydration? Drink plenty of water to rehydrate your body and flush out toxins.
  • Eat Healthy: Freeze all those leftover cookies and eat them as a rare treat. Transition back to a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
  • Exercise: Exercise doesn’t need to be a chore. Just a little stretching, walking, and weightlifting EVERY DAY is the way to go. Exercise can help boost your energy levels and improve your mood.
  • Breathe: Practice stress management techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to help you relax and stay focused.
  • Get Outside: Take a walk, sit in a park, and be at one with your surroundings. No earphones, music, or social media are allowed. 
  • Reflect: Now is a great time to consider what you enjoyed most about the holidays, what was stressful, and what you might want to do differently next year.
  • Set Goals: Set priorities and work from the top down to avoid feeling overwhelmed as you transition back to your normal schedule.
  • Act on Resolutions: Did you make any realistic New Year resolutions? Map out a plan for how you will achieve them.
Remember that it's okay to take your time and ease back into your routine gradually. Everyone's recovery process is different, so listen to your body and mind, and prioritize self-care during this period of adjustment.

Free Respite Care may be available to qualified caregivers.
Did you know that someone is looking after another adult in one of every four U.S. households? Caregiving is a labor of love but even the most devoted individuals need time for themselves.

The Statewide Respite Care Program (SRCP) provides free respite care to those who qualify. Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey (VNA) administers SRCP in Morris, Passaic, Somerset, and Sussex counties through grants received from the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Aging Services.
