Caregivers Need Care Too11/28/2023 Free Respite Care May be Available to You Someone is looking after another adult in one of every four U.S. households. While caregiving can be a rewarding expression of love, it’s also physically, emotionally and spiritually demanding, and even the most loving and devoted caregiver needs respite time. The Statewide Respite Care Program (SRCP) provides free respite care to those who qualify. Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey (VNA) administers the SRCP program in Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Passaic counties through grants received from the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Aging Services. A friendly, knowledgeable VNA professional can work with you to determine your eligibility. Go to: VNANNJ.org or call 1-800-WE VISIT (1-800-938-4748) for more information. Did you know that Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey (VNA) is the longest-serving VNA in the state of New Jersey? So we know a thing or two about healthy aging and how to successfully “age in place” while avoiding hospitalization and nursing homes. We suggest that you learn more about our home health care services and make a plan to age at home before you have a health emergency. Medicare and supplemental insurance often do not cover all the care our patients and caregivers need. If you would like to help, please visit vnannj.org/donate or call VNA Foundation at 973-451-4148. The Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey (VNA) is a leading provider of comprehensive home health care services in Morris, Hunterdon, Sussex, Warren, Somerset, and Passaic Counties in Northern New Jersey. Established in 1898, generations have known that just one call to VNA opens the door to quality, patient-centered home health care solutions that allow patients to remain in the comfort of their homes with dignity, health, and independence. © All content on The Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey's website, including blog posts, may be reproduced only if attributed to our organization with a link to vnannj.org.

Strengthening, stretching, balance, and aerobic exercises will keep you active, mobile, and feeling great. People tend to pursue just one type of exercise or activity and think that’s enough. Research shows that seniors should do four types of exercise, each with different benefits. Also, the variety helps keep you interested. According to the National Institute on Aging, the following four types of exercises can help improve seniors’ health and physical ability: Strength: Designed to strengthen your muscles, these exercises include activities like lifting weights, carrying groceries, gripping a tennis ball, lifting your body weight, or using a resistance band. Endurance: Endurance exercises help increase your breathing and heart rate so you can carry out daily tasks. Endurance activities include: Walking or jogging, dancing, climbing stairs, and swimming. If your mobility is limited, you can even march in place or march while sitting. Balance: Lower-body strengthening exercises can help improve balance and prevent falls. Adding balance-specific exercises to your routine is important as well. Tai Chi, standing on one foot, heel-to-toe walks, and standing from a seated position are all great activities that promote balance. Flexibility: These activities can help make it easier for you to bend down to tie your shoes or to look over your shoulders when needed. Flexibility exercises include stretching and yoga.
