Many seniors don’t protect their skin

Did you know?

• Fewer than half of older adults protect themselves when in the sun.
• Over 5 million people in the US are treated for skin cancer each year.
• Most cases of skin cancer occur in those 65 and older.

What to do?

• Stay in the shade when possible.
• Use a hat with a wide brim that shades your face and neck.
• Wear lightweight clothing that covers your skin, preferably sun protective clothing that blocks UV rays. Look for clothing with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 50.
• Above all, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30. Be sure to reapply every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating.
